What to Expect After Referral

Assessment

You will be offered a face-to-face appointment

However if you prefer we can also offer:

  • Telephone Consultation
  • Video Consultation

We will see your child within 14 weeks of their referral being received in the department.

It would be helpful if in preparation for the consultation you could have short video clips of your child participating in activities that they find difficult.

Attending Face-to-Face Appointment
  • Do not arrive in the department more that 5 minutes before your appointment
  • The assessment should be no longer than 60 minutes.
  • Please try NOT to bring siblings along.
  • Please could your child wear trousers/ shorts and flat shoes.

The assessment is non-invasive and usually comprises a series of small tasks and activities such as drawing, writing, threading beads, balancing and catching.

It may sometimes be necessary to carry out formal standardised assessments – these compare your child’s performance to the performance of other children of the same age.

After your Appointment

There are a number of possible outcomes at the end of your first appointment:

  • Your child may need no further intervention and be assessed as developing within normal limits for a child of their age
  • You may be given some advice and strategies to try at home with your child and be discharged from the service
  • Further assessment sessions may be required to gain a clearer understanding of your child’s strengths and needs. This may include a session at home or at school/ nursery
  • Your child may be offered a block of intervention to address the needs the therapist and you have identified
  • Your child may be referred to another professional for further assessment, for example a Physiotherapist or a Speech and Language Therapist

The referrer will be informed that your child has attended their Occupational Therapy appointment
