Rapid Access Breast Clinics

Most patients referred to us will be assessed in a Rapid Access Breast Clinic.  Our Rapid Access Breast Clinics take place on 4 sites across north Wales – Ysbyty Gwynedd and Ysbyty Llandudno in the West, Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and Ysbyty Wrecsam Maelor.

In clinic you will be seen by a specialist who will take your medical history and examine your breasts.  The specialist may arrange for tests to help decide whether any breast lump or abnormality is benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancerous).

These tests will be performed during your visit and so you may be in clinic all morning or all afternoon.  These tests may include:

  • Mammogram – a mammogram is an x-ray which examines your breasts
  • Ultrasound – a small device, which emits sound waves, is moved over the breast.  The sound waves are converted into a visual image showing the inside of the breast
  • Fine needle aspiration – a syringe with a fine needle is used to draw off a few cells or fluid from a breast lump
  • Needle core biopsy – a larger needle is used to obtain tissue from the area requiring biopsy

You will receive the results of your mammogram or ultrasound in the clinic; biopsy results usually take a week and we will let you know when and how you will receive these results before you leave clinic.

A specialist breast care nurse will be available to give you any information, advice and support you may require.
