If you have regular periods, one of the first and most reliable signs of pregnancy is a missed or very light period.
Other symptoms may include mood changes, tiredness, nausea or vomiting, stomach cramps, breast tenderness, increased frequency of urination, constipation and sensitivity to certain odours or flavours. The only way to know if you are pregnant is to do a pregnancy test, the earliest time for a reliable pregnancy test is 3 weeks after sexual intercourse. Pregnancy tests are available for free in a sexual health clinic.
If you are pregnant and wish to continue with the pregnancy, it is best to access healthcare as soon as possible. To do this contact your GP for an appointment with a midwife. If you are pregnant and do not wish to continue with the pregnancy and would like to request an abortion (termination of pregnancy), you can access the service via the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS).
Further information about planning your pregnancy including preconception information is available on our website.
