What will a cochlear implant give me?

This is quite a difficult question to answer as no two people with a cochlear implant have the same outcome. The outcome of a cochlear implant depends on many factors including duration of deafness, cause of hearing loss, experience with hearing aids and many others. Without knowing your own specific situation it is impossible to say what you are likely to hear with a cochlear implant. However what we do know is that those that score within the eligibility criteria for a cochlear implant are very likely to hear more with the cochlear implant than they do with their hearing aid. The main reported benefits are:

  • Relying less on lipreading
  • Hearing high frequency sounds around you such as birds and alarms
  • Ability to communicate easier with people

The best achievers with a cochlear implant are able to follow a conversation on the phone and enjoy music but this is not true of all people who are fitted with a cochlear implant. Most cochlear implant users also still have difficulties following a conversation in a noisy room but this can improve with practice. Our staff will discuss this further with you when you attend for an assessment if you are found to be within the criteria for a cochlear implant.
