Stroke Service

This Page is being developed

Our Stroke Services provide specialist care, treatment and rehabilitation for people affected by stroke across North Wales. We work closely with patients, families, carers and partner organisations to support recovery, reduce the risk of future strokes and help people regain independence.

Around 100,000 people in the UK have strokes every year. Approximately 7,676 of those are in Wales.

A stroke can happen suddenly and have a life-changing impact. Our multidisciplinary teams are here to provide expert care at every stage, from emergency treatment and acute hospital care through to rehabilitation and ongoing support in the community.

Our services focus on:

  • Stroke Prevention through education and health promotion
  • Rapid assessment and treatment
  • Specialist inpatient stroke care
  • Rehabilitation and recovery support
  • Helping people return home safely and confidently
  • Reducing the risk of further strokes
  • Supporting patients, families and carers with information and advice

Service development has seen a number of enhanced stroke services implemented by the Health Board across North Wales to improve care, rehabilitation and recovery for people affected by stroke.

These developments include:

Additional Stroke Specialist Nurses have enabled more patients arriving in our emergency departments across North Wales to receive rapid assessment and treatment by a trained stroke specialist.

Commencement of stroke specific Early Supported Discharge (ESD) services across all three Integrated Health Communities, helping eligible patients continue their rehabilitation at home with specialist support.

We also opened three Specialist Community Inpatient Rehabilitation Centres across North Wales at Llandudno General Hospital, Deeside Community Hospital and Ysbyty Eryri in Caernarfon. These units offer dedicated stroke rehabilitation environments for patients who require ongoing inpatient support following a stroke.

We have also strengthened our Multi-disciplinary rehabilitation teams across North Wales through additional therapy and psychology roles.

Our Health Board is the first in Wales to have Stroke Prevention Nurses who focus on providing  education and health promotion to help identify and support people who may be at increased risk of stroke, supporting earlier intervention and prevention. They hold events within local communities; organisations and businesses aswell providing education and training for staff and stroke patients and carers.
