Nurses set to 'Moon Walk' 26 miles to raise funds towards cancer charities

18 May 2023

Nurses from Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Intensive Care Unit are to take on a 26-mile challenge to raise funds towards breast cancer charities.

The seven nurses, Felicity Powell, Nikki Whiteman, Nicky Kelly, Tracey Jones, Karen Hughes, Susi Scudamore and Louise Lloyd will take part in the Walk the Walk event on 20 May, which is one of the largest grant making breast cancer charities in the UK.

The group decided to take on the challenge towards the end of last year but after learning of their colleague’s Lona Massarelli-Hughes’ shock breast cancer diagnosis they were even more determined to sign up.

Lona, who has worked on Cybi Ward (Intensive Care Ward) for almost 20 years, is now undergoing treatment and is incredibly supportive of her colleagues for taking on the walk.

She said: “I’m really proud of my colleagues and friends who will be taking on the Moonwalk this weekend for breast cancer charities.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer towards the end of last year and I have had incredible care from Ysbyty Gwynedd. I would like to thank my GP and the staff from Corwen House Surgery in Penygroes, Radiology, Phlebotomy and Alaw Day Unit and everyone else I have been seen by in the hospital so far, it’s been superb and I’d like to thank each and every one of them.

“It’s great that my colleagues are taking part in this walk, not only to raise vital funds for the charities but also to raise awareness.”

The ‘Cybi Sisters’ have been training for the last few months to prepare for their long trek ahead, which involves walking 26 miles through London during the night.

Sister Susi said: “We all signed up to this walk as we want to make a difference and we are incredibly inspired by the work that comes from the event and the awareness raised from it.

“We have received incredibly generous donations already but we would like to encourage as many people to help us raise as much money as possible for these amazing charities.

“There are so many people affected by cancer, and so many people are affected one way or the other from it. We are doing this for all them and also our special colleague Lona.”
