Eating well before pregnancy

Eating a nutritious and balanced diet can help to prepare and support your body for a future healthy pregnancy. This advice is important for anyone planning a pregnancy as good nutrition can help improve the quality of sperm as well as preparing the body to grow a future baby. There is no need to follow a special diet, instead focus on following the Eatwell Guide and enjoying a variety of foods from across the main food groups.

Watch this short video on the Eatwell Guide for useful hints and tips. Research shows that eating a balanced and varied diet before pregnancy can positively support a child’s future health and development.

Healthy Weight

Working towards achieving and maintaining a healthy weight before planning a pregnancy can help to increase your fertility and the chances of becoming pregnant. Being within the healthy weight range can also help reduce the risk of problems such as raised blood pressure (pre eclampsia) and gestational diabetes.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that uses your height and weight to work out if your weight is in a healthy range.
