Babies and toddlers are at a greater risk of injury from burns and scalds as their skin is much thinner and delicate compared to an adult's. You will need to take extra care to prevent these types of accidents happening to your baby.
Reducing the risk of burns and scalds
- Keep hot drinks away from your baby. Put hot drinks in safe zones where your baby can't reach or pull them down. Make sure you put your hot drinks down in your safe zone before you pick up and hold your baby.
- Keep your hair straighteners or curling wands out of reach while they cool. There is a risk your baby could grab and pull the wire which is why it is important to keep any hazards well out the way.
- When bathing your baby, test the temperature with your elbow before your putting your baby in the water.
- If you are cooking then try and use the rings at the back of the cooker and turn saucepan handles away from the front of the cooker, so they cannot be grabbed. Try and keep your baby out the kitchen when you're cooking or keep them away from the cooker.
