Water Safety for Babies

Introducing your baby to water is an exciting time however it is important to be extra careful to keep them safe around water.

Washing and bathing your baby

You don't need to bathe your baby every day as you may prefer to just wash their face, neck, hands and bottom instead.

We advise you do not bathe your baby straight after a feed or when they are hungry or tired.

You will need to stay with your baby at all times they are in the water.

Here's some useful tips and things to consider when bathing your baby:

  • Make sure the room you're bathing them in is warm.
  • Have everything you need ready including a baby bath or clean washing-up bowl filled with warm water, two towels, a clean nappy, clean clothes and cotton wool.
  • The water temperature should be warm. Check the temperature with your wrist or elbow before bathing your baby.
  • Keep your baby's head clear of the water. Use the other hand to gently swish the water over your baby.
  • Baby bath seats should not be used as there is a risk your baby could slip out. It is important that you support and hold them at all times if you choose to use a baby seat. Further information about bath seat safety advice can be found on the Child Accident Prevention Trust website.

See the NHS 111 Wales website for more information about washing your baby safely.

Staying safe around water when out and about

There are dangers associated with leaving babies and young children unsupervised for a short period of time, even in the shallowest waters. See the Child Accident Prevention Trust website for more information about water safety in the garden and at the beach.
