Urology is a surgical specialty covering the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureter, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs. It is a specialty in which we diagnose and treat patients with cancer, stones, infections, urinary difficulty, erectile difficulties and subfertility. We see a wide range of patients of both sexes, and from all age groups including children to elderly pensioners.
Urology has proved itself to be one of the most innovative surgical specialties, with pioneering high technology fibre-optic and endoscopic techniques (minimally invasive surgery). In addition, Urology was one of the first specialties to use "keyhole" surgery routinely, as well as robotic surgery for complex cases. Importantly, most of the modern treatments are available in the three North Wales hospitals. All hospitals have access to modern prostate cancer diagnostic facilities, including Multiparametric MRI scans and Transperineal Template mapping biopsies. Wrexham is specialist centre for complex stone surgery (Lasers and PCNL), complex incontinence surgery, andrology (penile prosthesis) and modern benign prostate surgery (HOLEP, iTIND, Urolift, Rezum).
Urology is a busy, exciting and ever developing specialty with the majority of our work done in outpatients or the short-stay day area. A small number of patients need more complex inpatient procedures.
