DXA Scanning

Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) is a specialised x-ray technique that enables the Bone Mineral Density (BMD) to be measured accurately. This measurement allows the radiographer to assess the strength of your bones and your risk of fracture. The measurements are taken from a single hip and lumbar spine region.

The BMD measurement assesses the risk of a patient having Osteoporosis or Osteopenia and who would benefit from treatment.

The DXA scan takes approximately 10-15 minutes; you will be required to complete a questionnaire on arrival regarding medication, previous fractures and brief medical history.

The results will then be sent to either your GP or the Consultant that referred you for the DXA scan.
