We strongly recommend that you register for NHS Wales app and use this to order your repeat prescriptions – the system has been specially designed for NHS patients in Wales and is the safest and easiest way to request prescriptions and book appointments at your GP practice. You can find more information on the NHS Wales app here
If you are on regular medication you will be able to order a repeat prescription when you medication is due.
Each GP Surgery will have its own arrangements for how you order your repeat prescription but you should allow at least two working days for your surgery to process your prescription. Your chosen Community Pharmacy may have a prescription collection service so that you can collect your medication direct from the pharmacy after you have ordered your repeat prescription via the GP Surgery.
Before you order your repeat prescription it is useful to check what medication you have at home so that you only order what you need.
Please don’t stockpile your medicines as they could go out of date. The most expensive medicine is the one that isn’t taken. For further information please see the 'Don’t let your Medicines go to Waste' leaflet.
These prescriptions are usually dispensed from a Community Pharmacy. In rural areas where a patient lives further than 1.6km from a Community Pharmacy, and is registered with a Dispensing GP Surgery, the patient can obtain his/her medication from their GP.
If you see a doctor in a hospital out-patients department he/she will advise you when you need to start a new treatment.
You may be given a letter or advice note for your GP for your next routine appointment. If treatment is to start more quickly then a hospital prescription may be issued which has to be dispensed in the hospital pharmacy department.
Hospital forms are valid for dispensing only by the hospital pharmacy. You may be given a WP10HP form which is a hospital doctor's prescription which should be dispensed by a Community Pharmacy. You will be advised of this when given the prescription.
Prescriptions generated by your GP Surgery cannot be dispensed by the hospital pharmacy department.
If you are using stoma products you have the choice of receiving your supplies from a community pharmacy or from an appliance contractor. Prescriptions will still need to be requested via your GP Surgery regardless of your supplier choice. You should be given impartial advice when you are started on a product.
