Learning Disability Hospital Services

We have dedicated Learning Disabilities Acute Liaison Nurses (ALNs) based in each of our district general hospitals. The ALNs make it easier for patients with learning disabilities to access hospital services.

Where needed, they provide a point of contact to family and carers, as well as offering advice and guidance for patients and staff involved in providing their care. ALNs support patients to have as much control of their treatment as possible by ensuring they understand their diagnosis, treatment options and aftercare arrangements. Where patients lack capacity, they ensure care and treatment is done in their best interests and The Mental Capacity Act is followed. 

ALNs support adults with learning disabilities, their families/carers and hospital staff to:

  • Help adults with a learning disability to better understand their health needs and treatment.
  • Ensure necessary reasonable adjustments are implemented. 
  • Advocate for adults with a learning disability with regard to capacity, consent, best interests and actively adhering to the mental capacity act.
  • Link in with ward based acute staff and other health and social care professionals to ensure a seamless service through admission, treatment and discharge.
  • Improve patient experience and the experiences of those supporting them.
  • Identify and train key staff in each ward and department within the acute setting to be a learning disability champion.
  • Offer and deliver general training of learning disability awareness to ward based staff and where necessary advice around individual patient issues.
  • Provide Easy Read information on assessment, diagnosis, treatments and aftercare.
  • Ensure that people with a learning disability receive prompt and appropriate treatment and remain safe.
