Ward staff support for hearing aid users - Callum Preston

Most hospital inpatients are over the age of 65, and many have hearing loss. This can make important conversations on hospital wards more difficult. We surveyed ward staff across Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to identify what helps and what hinders them in supporting these patients’ communication (including adapting communication, supporting hearing-aid use, and using assistive technology). We found that staff were highly motivated to help but lacked the time, equipment, and access to information about which patients have hearing loss and need support. There were also gaps in knowledge and awareness of how to support these patients effectively. We will use these results to help ward staff support older adults with hearing loss more effectively.
