The procedure involves a catheter (a soft non latex tube) being inserted into your cervix. The catheter has a balloon near the tip and when it is in the right place the balloon is filled with sterile water, putting a gentle pressure on your cervix. The pressure should soften and open your cervix enough to start labour or to be able to break the waters around your baby.
