Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and the Ablett Mental Health Unit has successfully implemented Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (ePMA).

This marks the third acute implementation within the programme in just three months and represents a significant step forward in the Health Board’s commitment to modernising medicines management and improving patient safety.

The scale of the deployment was considerable. Over the course of the three-day go-live period, more than 550 patients  were manually transcribed onto the digital system, ensuring continuity of care as services transitioned safely from paper to electronic prescribing.

To support the implementation, Pharmacy, Medical, Nursing and Admin staff from across the Health Board came together, working side by side to deliver the final acute site deployment. This collective effort demonstrated the strength of collaboration across teams, with colleagues supporting one another to ensure the go-live was delivered safely and successfully.

The achievement reflects the dedication, professionalism and teamwork of staff across clinical, pharmacy, nursing and digital teams, as well as the strong partnership working between BCUHB, Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW) and supplier Better.

Rhys Davies, Interim Director Of Pharmacy & Medicines Management, said:

“The implementation of ePMA in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and the Ablett Unit is a transformational change for medicines management and will have a positive impact on patient safety, experience and medicines optimisation for our patients.

This is a significant achievement, delivered by the hard work, dedication and collaboration of pharmacy, nursing, medical and digital teams, and it has been a pleasure witnessing the multi-disciplinary teamwork combining to deliver such a successful outcome.

We will build on this experience as we continue to roll out ePMA within our Community Sites and Outpatient departments by the end of March.”

Delivering implementations across three Geographical regions in three months represents an enormous undertaking and an incredible achievement for everyone involved. Each go-live builds on the learning from the last, strengthening the programme and helping ensure safer, more effective medicines management across the organisation.

Following the successful Central Acute deployment, the programme now moves into its next phase.

Central Community hospitals are scheduled to begin their ePMA go-live from 16 March, while work also continues to expand Outpatient prescribing across all three Integrated Health Communities.

These next steps will further extend the benefits of digital prescribing, supporting safer medicines management and improved patient care across more services.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved in delivering this milestone. The dedication, flexibility and teamwork demonstrated throughout the programme continue to show the Health Board’s strong commitment to transformation and improving care for patients.
