ePMA will transform prescribing and medicines management across the Health Board, with an innovative digital system replacing paper charts in hospital and community sites
We are embracing digital transformation through a pioneering electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (ePMA) system. Partnering with Better UK, we will implement this cutting-edge digital solution in over 40 hospitals, replacing paper-based processes to improve patient care and streamline prescribing across wards.
The ePMA system enhances medication safety by providing clear, digital prescriptions with in-built safety checks for allergies, drug interactions and dosage. This ensures accuracy in prescribing and enables smooth communication between departments and healthcare teams, keeping medication information current and accessible.
Supported by Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW), ePMA is part of a wider digital strategy aimed at making medication management more efficient for patients, doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. By reducing paper use, the project also supports our sustainability goals.
This initiative is a collaborative effort involving our pharmacy, nursing, digital, and clinical teams. As part of a £6.7 million investment by the Welsh Government, the aim is for ePMA to be fully implemented across all of our hospitals by March 2026. This will be a significant step toward a fully digital health record system and improved healthcare delivery across North Wales.
