How to become an SLT Become a speech and language therapist | RCSLT

Roles – SLTs - Speech and language therapists (SLTs) provide treatment, support and care for people of all ages who have difficulties with speech, language, communication, eating, drinking and swallowing. They work in all kinds of areas and settings to improve people’s quality of life.

 SLTAs or TIs - Speech and language therapy assistants are the frontline of helping patients with conditions that affect their communication, swallowing and feeding. It could also be your first step in becoming a speech and language therapist.  

Admin – Our administrative team have a key role in providing secretarial, administrative and organisational support to the Speech and Language Therapy Team.

Observations -
In BCUHB Speech and Language Therapy department, we offer 2 options:

1.    Half day observation with children and half day observation with adults. This will meet the minimum requirement for university applications and also help those who are trying to find out more about the role.

2.    ‘Obs for jobs’ enables applicants to spend more time in our department. For each session that you volunteer in the department (for example, making up equipment, supporting the admin team) we will offer you an observation session with a therapist or technical instructor. This will enable you to spend more time with our team and gain a fuller understanding of how the department operates.
