Preoperative assessment

Before surgery we need to find out about your general health.  You will be sent an appointment for a preoperative assessment clinic where you will be seen by a nurse and a pharmacist.

When you are invited for a preoperative assessment, the letter will detail what you need to do.  You will have your weight, height and blood pressure checked.  During or after this clinic, further tests may be arranged for example blood tests, x-rays or tracings of your heart.  You can ask questions and discuss any worries that you may have during this clinic.

During your preoperative assessment clinic, we will discuss health and possible changes you can make to reduce your risk of post-operative complications.  To read more about your health before surgery, please visit Getting ready for your Surgery.

Please remember to bring with you your current medications in the packets (including any that you buy from the chemist or shops) or your repeat prescription.

At this appointment you will be asked questions about your health, existing medical conditions, and previous surgery and anaesthetic.

This appointment can take up to 2 hours.
