We welcome the findings of Healthcare Inspectorate Wales’ latest inspection of the Hergest Unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd and are encouraged by the positive feedback recognising the compassion, professionalism and dedication of our staff.
Teresa Owen, Executive Director of Allied Health Professionals and Health Science, said: “The report highlights strong teamwork across the Aneurin, Cynan and Taliesin wards, with patients and families describing staff as approachable, attentive and supportive. We are particularly pleased that the inspection recognised the quality of compassionate care being delivered in challenging circumstances, alongside the strength of our safeguarding arrangements, infection prevention and control measures, and the clear commitment to patient safety. The presence of bilingual staff, enabling patients to communicate in Welsh or English, is also an important strength and reflects our commitment to person-centred care.
“While we are encouraged that inspectors noted progress since the previous inspection in 2023, we acknowledge and take seriously the areas where further improvement is required. We recognise the importance of providing meaningful, structured therapeutic activities to support recovery and accept that this remains an area needing focused attention.
“The report also highlights challenges relating to record-keeping, the physical environment, and workforce pressures, including staffing vacancies and reliance on temporary staff. We fully accept the recommendations around improving documentation, medication management and the consistency of staff training and appraisals, and we are progressing actions to address these issues including progressing the Mental Health and Learning Disability Electronic Health Record business case.
“We also recognise the concerns raised by staff around wellbeing, resources and senior leadership visibility. Supporting our teams is a priority, and we will continue to engage directly with staff to ensure they feel listened to, supported and involved in shaping improvements.
“Our staff at the Hergest Unit continue to show resilience and commitment to delivering safe and compassionate care, and we are grateful for their dedication. We continue to work closely with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales and we will build on the positives identified in this inspection while addressing the areas requiring further action, to ensure patients receive high-quality care.”
