The large multi-disciplinary team behind the health board’s Long Covid Service has been handed an award for its pioneering approach to treating people suffering persistent symptoms of the virus.
Members of the team collected the Partnership Award at the glittering Betsi Cadwaladr Achievement Awards.
In the midst of the pandemic, the new service brought together patients, senior clinicians from a number of specialties, front line staff and community organisations to learn more about and develop a treatment model for the previously unknown condition.
Living with Long Covid in the early part of the pandemic was often isolating and frightening. Some patients with Long Covid are severely disabled by their symptoms, affecting their ability to carry out everyday tasks, go to work and care for their families.
The team worked closely with patients to co-produce a treatment programme which met their needs, including group and one-to-one therapy provided in person at community venues across North Wales and online. Patients can refer themselves or be referred by a health professional.
Patient experience officer Zoe Gamble said she nominated her colleagues after being inspired by their work.
“This is a service designed specifically for this specific, very complex group of patients – patients who have been completely devastated by an acute COVID-19 infection followed by a range of symptoms,” she said.
Dr Joanne Pike, from award sponsor Wrexham University, said: “Partnership working is part and parcel of what makes the NHS tick.
“Congratulations to Betsi Cadwaladr’s Long Covid service for winning this award. Their efforts of working in partnership with patients and stakeholders was an outstanding example of the power and value of co-production.”
Jez Nash, Chief Executive for overall award sponsor Centerprise International, said: “In our sixth year sponsoring the BCUHB Achievement Awards, I continue to be impressed by the outstanding commitment of NHS staff in North Wales.
“They are innovative in their approach to care provision and demonstrable relentless compassion for their patients and colleagues.
“We were delighted to share the occasion with the 500 NHS staff at the awards, and proud to be able to continue our association with a great night celebrating their efforts.
“Huge congratulations to everyone shortlisted at this year’s awards.”
