A dedicated duo who help asylum seekers and refugees access vital health services have been recognised for their commitment to some of the most vulnerable people in North Wales.
Specialist heath visitor Jackie Williams and community staff nurse Sharon Woods were named as the winners of the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion category at the Betsi Cadwaladr Achievement Awards.
The pair work with a wide range of partners across Wrexham and Flintshire to support people who have been displaced and tackle health-related inequalities.
They complete comprehensive health assessments with asylum seekers and refugees, help their patients get the medical and dental care they need, and coordinate appointments for vaccinations, mental health and other services.
With a large and increasing workload, Jackie and Sharon have continued to give extra support to displaced children and young people – working closely with schools and school nurses to make sure children get the help they need to settle into class.
Jackie and Sharon were nominated for the award by Service Manager for School Nursing and Health Visiting, Sarah Jones.
“Both Jackie and Sharon go above and beyond to work closely with children and their families, and to support them through what has been a traumatic time,” Sarah said.
“They go the extra mile to give time to listen and understand individual needs, respecting cultural differences and beliefs, and signposting to other agencies to give wider support outside of health.”
Jackie and Sharon were unable to attend the presentation because of poor weather – but the award was collected on their behalf by Andrea Hughes, Director of Nursing for our East Integrated Health Community.
Robyn Williams, of award sponsors Agoriad, said: “Ensuring everyone has parity of access to services is of paramount importance to both ourselves and the NHS.
“I was delighted to hear about the efforts of all three finalists in this important award. Congratulations to Jackie and Sharon on their outstanding efforts to ensure everyone who needs access to NHS services get the help and support they need.”
Jez Nash, Chief Executive for overall awards sponsor Centerprise International, said: “In our sixth year sponsoring the BCUHB Achievement Awards, I continue to be impressed by the outstanding commitment of NHS staff in North Wales.
“They are innovative in their approach to care provision and demonstrable relentless compassion for their patients and colleagues.
“We were delighted to share the occasion with the 500 NHS staff at the awards, and proud to be able to continue our association with a great night celebrating their efforts.
“Huge congratulations to everyone shortlisted at this year’s awards.”
