Beating heart of Glan Clwyd Hospital celebrates 20 years of lifesaving with open day

13.03.2026

The public will get a glimpse into the workings of our Cardiac Cath Lab, during an open day celebrating two decades of lifesaving this weekend.

The 20th Anniversary open day takes place at Glan Clwyd Hospital on Saturday, March 14, with an invitation to come and get a free check-up at the same time. It also marks a unique opportunity to see the workings of a vital medical specialty.

The team will be on hand to help you through various tests and assessments, as well as demonstrations of CPR (Cardiovascular Pulmonary Resuscitation) and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).

Cardiology Clinical Lead, Consultant Cardiologist Chetan Upadyaya, wants to see the public take advantage of this opportunity to see the work he and his colleagues undertake. He also wants to make an important point about heart health.

He said: “While it is a wonderful achievement and I am proud to help celebrate 20 years of this department, I want the public to take some serious messages away from this unique opportunity.

“My colleagues and I are dedicated to treating the public when they need us but prevention is always preferable to cure. Heart health is a major issue within society and we would rather people learned how to keep themselves as healthy as possible, for a long as possible.

“That is why our experts will be on hand on Saturday, March 14, not only to offer the opportunity for free checks for things like high cholesterol and high blood pressure but to promote good heart health habits.

“We would love to see as many people as possible on Saturday. We’ll be showing videos of patients speaking about their experiences, as well giving tours around the Cath Lab and demonstrations of CPR and AED. It is a unique opportunity to share the work we do and our expertise with the people we serve.”

Stands on the day will have opportunities to speak about atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rhythm), have a blood pressure check, cholesterol check, take a diabetes test and get advice on quitting smoking. You can also speak to someone about your Q Risk (your risk of cardiovascular disease) and how to reduce it.

For those who really want to get into the nitty gritty of Cath Lab work, you can even see before and after pictures of blocked arteries, then post-treatment with stents. A walk around the Cath Labs and a description of the work going on there is also on offer, as well as that demonstration of CPR and how to use an AED.

The Cath Lab Open Day, celebrating 20 years of service to the public, takes place between 11am-2pm on Saturday, March 14, 2026. No appointment is necessary and all are welcome. Just walk in and get your free heart health check.

*The Cath Lab is part of North Wales Cardiac Centre. Enter the main hospital campus via the roundabout, then drive past the main hospital building and turn first right. You’ll find the Cardiac Centre on the right-hand side.
