Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Theatres Open Day welcomed more than 70 attendees for an engaging and educational behind-the-scenes experience, showcasing the vital work of the hospital’s surgical teams and the cutting-edge technology that supports patient care.
The event featured inspirational talks from leading Consultants, including Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Ifan Rees, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Muthu Ganapathi, Consultant General Surgeon Mr Chris Houlden, and Consultant Breast Surgeon Miss Mei-Ju Whang. Each shared not only insights into their clinical specialties but also personal stories about their career journeys, offering attendees a deeper understanding of the dedication and passion behind their roles.
Following the talks, guests were invited into the operating theatres where they explored the latest advancements in robotic surgery and observed a live anaesthetic simulation. The Recovery team also provided valuable perspectives on post-operative care, and attendees learned about the critical role of the Scrub Nurse in maintaining surgical safety and efficiency.
The event was organised entirely by the Theatre team, with special recognition given to Senior Theatre Practitioner Shan Roberts and Senior Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) Catrin Jones for their leadership and coordination.
Reflecting on the day, Shan Roberts said: "I’m incredibly proud of our team for putting together such a successful and inspiring event. It was wonderful to see so many people engage with the work we do and take an interest in the future of surgical care. Thank you to everyone who attended and to our staff who made the day so memorable. We hope to make this an annual event so even more people can gain an insight into the vital roles that support surgical care."
Catrin added: “I share Shan’s sentiments and feel truly fortunate to work alongside such a dynamic and supportive team.”
Dr Karen Mottart, West Integrated Health Community Medical Director, praised the team behind the day, she said: "This event exemplifies the dedication and innovation of our teams at Ysbyty Gwynedd. It’s fantastic to see our staff sharing their expertise and passion with the community, and I commend everyone involved for delivering such a well-organised and impactful day."
