A Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant at Ysbyty Gwynedd has been recognised for his outstanding commitment to patient care, education, and teamwork at this year’s Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) Achievement Awards.
Mr Haroon Mumtaz, who has led ground-breaking work in trauma and orthopaedics, was named the winner of the Extra Mile Award at a ceremony held at Venue Cymru.
Mr Mumtaz has performed over 50 ankle replacements – placing him among the top three surgeons in the UK – with projections showing he will lead the country this year. His pioneering work helps to prevent joint immobility and arthritis, transforming the lives of patients suffering from debilitating conditions.
Alongside his elective surgical work, Mr Mumtaz established Ysbyty Gwynedd’s diabetic foot service, which has become a lifeline for patients at risk of limb loss.
He also specialises in complex reconstructions, trauma, and limb-saving procedures, and is particularly well-known across the region for his expertise in treating Lisfranc injuries, often seen in horse riders. His innovative research into using hindfoot nails for ankle fractures has helped patients regain mobility much earlier, with this pioneering approach now being adopted by leading medical centres across the UK.
As well as being a respected surgeon, Mr Mumtaz is dedicated to education and training. He provides hands-on guidance for junior doctors and registrars, both in theatre and through virtual teaching sessions that reach trainees across Wales, Merseyside, and North West England. He also contributes to charitable teaching courses in Manchester, with proceeds going to good causes.
Colleagues describe him as approachable and compassionate, always ready to provide advice and support, whether professionally or personally. In his role as Clinical Director for Surgery, Anaesthetics & Critical Care, he has fostered a culture of respect, teamwork, and collaboration, often organising opportunities to strengthen relationships among staff.
Mr Mumtaz’s willingness to share his expertise across North Wales, whether through dual consultant surgeries or mentoring, reflects his generosity and dedication to improving patient care.
Karen Evans, Directorate General Manager for Surgery, Anaesthetics and Critical Care at Ysbyty Gwynedd, said: “Mr Mumtaz’s compassion for patients, commitment to sharing knowledge, and dedication to supporting colleagues make him an inspirational figure in our organisation. His achievements and leadership embody what the ‘Extra Mile Award’ is all about.”
Nick Napier-Andrews, Strategic Partnership Lead for award sponsor ID Medical, said: “We are delighted to again support the Health Board’s achievement awards.
“Every year we hear outstanding examples in this category of NHS staff going the extra mile in their work, and this year was no exception.
“Huge congratulations to all three finalists, and Mr Mumtaz in particular for winning this award.”
