The Enhanced Maternity Care team at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd has been recognised for their outstanding dedication and innovation, winning the Team of the Year Award at this year’s Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board Achievement Awards, held at Venue Cymru.
The team has introduced a transformative model of care that provides enhanced midwifery support for acutely unwell women. This initiative allows mothers requiring Category Level 2 care to remain on the delivery suite, keeping mothers and babies together and reducing the need for transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
By upskilling midwives to deliver this level of care, the team has significantly improved patient safety, emotional wellbeing, and overall maternity experiences. Key benefits include:
Early detection and intervention: Midwives are trained to identify subtle changes in maternal condition using advanced monitoring, allowing rapid response to prevent complications.
Continuity of care: Mothers remain on the delivery suite, receiving care from familiar midwives who understand their history and individual needs.
Reduced ICU transfers: Minimising ICU admissions ensures critical care resources remain available for those most in need.
Collaborative multidisciplinary care: Midwives work closely with obstetricians, anaesthetists, and critical care specialists to provide seamless, high-quality care.
The team’s approach also has a profound psychological impact, keeping mothers and babies together during critical health events. Benefits include reduced anxiety and stress, improved breastfeeding support, stronger family-centred care, and a lower risk of postnatal depression.
The success of the initiative is attributed to the team’s commitment to training and continuous professional development. The program included advanced clinical skills, simulated emergency scenarios, multidisciplinary learning, and ongoing mentorship.
Through their skill, collaboration, and commitment to excellence, the team has set a new benchmark for maternity care, demonstrating the remarkable difference a dedicated group of healthcare professionals can make.
