Patients, staff and visitors at Ysbyty Bryn Beryl in Pwllheli will now be able to enjoy the benefits of a tranquil new dementia-friendly garden.
The garden has been created to provide a safe, calming, and therapeutic outdoor space for all Llynfor Ward patients and designed to support the wellbeing of patients living with dementia, as well as their families and the staff who care for them.
Matron Rhona Jones, who helped oversee the development of the garden, said: “This beautiful new space will make such a difference to our patients, their families, and our staff. For patients living with dementia, time spent outdoors can have real therapeutic benefits – from reducing anxiety and confusion to improving mood and wellbeing. It also gives our staff a calm and relaxing environment where they can take a moment to recharge during their busy shifts.”
The official opening was attended by members of the Ysbyty Bryn Beryl League of Friends and also Pwllheli Mayor Ffiona Adams, who officially opened the garden.
She said: “I feel incredibly privileged to have been invited to open this wonderful new dementia garden. Ysbyty Bryn Beryl means so much to the people of Pwllheli and the wider community, and it’s heartwarming to see projects like this making such a positive impact on local patients and their families.”
Chair of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Dyfed Edwards, also attended the event and praised the efforts of everyone involved.
“It was a pleasure to attend the official opening and see this fantastic new garden for myself. Creating spaces like this makes a real difference for patients, their families, and our staff.”
Dementia gardens are specially designed outdoor spaces that help stimulate the senses, encourage gentle activity, and create opportunities for social interaction in a safe environment. They can play a vital role in improving wellbeing, reducing stress, and enhancing quality of life for people living with dementia, while also providing staff and visitors with a peaceful place to reflect and relax.
