Minor Injury Units – helping you get the right care, quickly and close to home

4 December 2025

Healthcare teams across North Wales are encouraging people to make the most of their local Minor Injuries Units (MIUs) – fast, convenient services designed to treat a wide range of non-life-threatening injuries without the need for a long wait in an Emergency Department.

MIUs are run by highly skilled Emergency Nurse Practitioners who can assess, diagnose and treat many common injuries on the spot. They provide expert care for adults and children with conditions such as:

• Minor cuts, sprains and bruises
• Limb injuries
• Minor burns and scalds
• Minor head injuries and scalp lacerations
• Human or animal bites
• Minor eye injuries
• Ear and nose foreign bodies
• Insect stings and other minor wounds

With shorter waiting times and easily accessible locations, MIUs are an excellent alternative to Emergency Departments for these types of injuries – helping patients get the right care more quickly while keeping emergency services free for those who need them most.

Elen Jones, Emergency Nurse Practitioner at Denbigh Community Hospital MIU, said: “Many people don’t realise just how much we can do in our Minor Injury Units. We can assess, treat and even order X-rays in some cases. If anyone is unsure, we’re always happy to take a call and advise whether we can help. Often, patients are surprised by how quickly they can be seen and treated.”

However, staff are reminding people that MIUs are designed for minor, non-life-threatening injuries only. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as chest pain, breathing difficulties, stroke symptoms, heavy bleeding, or suspected sepsis should go directly to an Emergency Department or call 999, where the right specialist teams and equipment are available.

Sue Morris, Unit Manager at Llandudno Hospital MIU, said: “Our teams are experienced in treating a wide range of minor injuries and are passionate about providing high-quality care close to home. But for life-threatening or serious conditions, patients need to be in an Emergency Department where they can receive urgent assessment and specialist treatment.”

Tracy Lewis, Matron for Llandudno Hospital, added: “By choosing an MIU for minor injuries, people can often be seen and treated much faster. It also helps ensure that Emergency Departments are available for those who really need them – which benefits everyone.”

If you’re unsure whether your injury can be treated at a Minor Injuries Unit, you can contact your local MIU directly or call NHS 111 for advice before travelling.
