Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has become the latest organisation in North Wales to commit to exploring healthier and more sustainable travel by signing the region’s Healthy Travel Charter
Over the next two years, we will assess our performance against the charter – and explore how we can make it easier for staff, patients and visitors to use alternative ways to visit our sites.
The 15-point document encourages all organisations in North Wales to consider ways to promote active travel, encourage use of public transport, and provide facilities for cycling and walking.
Chair Dyfed Edwards and chief executive Carol Shillabeer signed the charter following approval at the health board’s most recent meeting last month.
“Signing the charter means we are joining councils, other health organisations and partners throughout Wales by making a commitment to explore how we can help people to choose healthier ways to travel,” Dyfed said.
“We all know that moving more is good for us – and small changes can make a big difference to our physical and mental health. The health board wants to do all we can to encourage more people to get and stay active, and reduce harmful emissions wherever possible.
“We know that choosing healthier ways to travel is particularly challenging in more rural areas like North Wales, but working together with our partners we will seek to influence the travel infrastructure and facilities available in our region to enable more people to make that choice where they can.”
Carol said: “We are pleased to be joining public sector organisations across North Wales in signing the charter, alongside our partners in the Regional Partnership and Public Service boards.
“We are now focused on the practical steps we can take to support and encourage staff and visitors who use our sites to take public transport, walk, cycle, and increase their use of lower-emission vehicles where they can.”
