Nurses from the Gynae Oncology team at Ysbyty Gwynedd are lacing up their trainers and taking on the Bangor Half Marathon in October 2025 to raise funds for a much-needed transformation in their department.
The team – Christine and Caryl with support from Lia who is not running but playing a large supporting role and big part in the fundraising efforts – are hoping to raise £1,500 towards creating a relaxed and welcoming space within the Gynaecology Outpatients Department, where women and their families can receive sensitive information and support following a cancer diagnosis.
The team hopes the funds raised will allow them to turn a room into a warm, comfortable, and calming area, helping women feel more supported and at ease during what is often one of the most challenging times of their lives.
Caryl Butterworth, Gynae Oncology Nurse Specialist, said: "Being told you have cancer is life-changing, and the environment where you receive that news makes a huge difference. We want to create a space that feels private, calm, and supportive, somewhere women can talk openly and feel truly cared for."
Christine Plant, Gynae Oncology Nurse Specialist, added: "We see every day how overwhelming this journey can be for women and their families. By improving this space, we can make a difficult experience just a little bit easier and provide the compassion and dignity our patients deserve."
The team are calling on the public to support their efforts and help improve the care environment for women who are diagnosed with gynaecological cancers.
Donations can be made through the team’s JustGiving page, where all funds raised will go directly towards the project.
