Nurse sets up volunteer-led stoma support group in Flintshire

01/11/2024

A new stoma support group called Three Bags Full has recently been launched in Mold and is inviting others to join.

Tom Russell, a Stoma Nurse at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, set up the group as he saw first-hand the experiences his patients were going through, and thought they didn’t need to go through it alone.

The group, which is led by the volunteers, is open to anyone who has a stoma or is about to undergo any type of stoma surgery.

Tom said: “The need for a group like this was widely requested by patients living in the area, as previous to this the nearest stoma group was in Oswestry.

“The meeting is for ongoing support for stoma patients from stoma patients. We’ve had our first meeting which was attended by about 25 people, and discussions were wide ranging covering stoma and non-stoma topics.

“We have plans to have talks from dieticians, physiotherapists and others to help everyone attending. Anyone who has a stoma or will be having surgery for one is welcome to attend.”

The group meets on the second Wednesday of the month at Mold Rugby Club at 7pm.
