Prof Mike Larvin

Mike was born and raised in North-East England, studying Psychology and then Medicine at Guy’s Hospital, London. He gained a research doctorate from the University of Leeds and completed training in Liver and Pancreatic Surgery there, after fellowships in the USA, Sweden and Germany.

In 1993 he was appointed Consultant Senior Lecturer at Guy’s Medical School and University Hospital Lewisham. In 1996 he returned to the Leeds where he was Director of Surgery for the Leeds Teaching Hospitals and was elected Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

In 2002 he joined the University of Nottingham as Professor of Surgery within the Graduate Entry Medical School development team, also joining the regional Pancreatic Cancer team and founding the East Midlands Bariatric Surgical Service.

In 2012 he became Head of the new University of Limerick Medical School Medicine in Ireland and was a member of the Irish Nursing & Midwifery Board. From 2017 he joined the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland’s new medical school in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as Dean, returning to the UK in 2021 as Executive Head of the School of Medical and Health Sciences at Bangor University and Honorary Consultant Surgeon to Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

Having advised on new medical school developments in the UK and abroad, Mike is leading on the development of the new North Wales Medical School, due to open in Autumn 2024 subject to General Medical Council approval. He believes this will help resolve the region’s shortfalls in medical staffing and improve access to healthcare across North Wales, particularly for Welsh speakers.
