Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgery is a specialty focusing on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders of the blood vessels, excluding the heart, lungs and brain.

The Vascular Surgical Service provides emergency and elective treatment for patients with conditions of the vascular system. These conditions include life-threatening emergencies such as dissecting aortic aneurysms (an abnormal dilation or ballooning of an artery caused by the pressure of blood flowing through the area) and less severe conditions such as varicose veins.

Many vascular conditions can now be treated in a less invasive manner, using interventional radiology. Surgery is still required for the more complex conditions.

Patients are referred to the Vascular Service via their GP.
