Information on becoming pregnant if you have a current or previous mental health condition

If you have a current or previous mental health condition, becoming pregnant can cause a reoccurrence or worsening of symptoms. Although for some people, they may not notice any changes.

We advise you to consider preconception counselling with either your GP or your mental health practitioner. They can advise on how your mental health might be impacted by pregnancy and to discuss suitable preventative, care and treatment options.

Having a discussion about your options is particularly important if you are taking medication to support your mental health condition, and should preferably happen before you become pregnant. This is due to some medications requiring a change in dose or additional monitoring during pregnancy, whilst a small number of medications are not advised during pregnancy and therefore alternatives need to be considered. Please do not make any changes to your medication without discussing it first with your healthcare practitioner.
