Meet some of our Robins

Lucy had been a full-time mum to four children and when her youngest child started secondary school in 2023, she decided to sign up for a volunteering role. Lucy chose to volunteer with the Robins as she enjoyed meeting new people and had a passion to help and care for others.  Lucy applied to study midwifery in September 2024 at Bangor University and, not surprisingly, she was offered a place on their Spring intake and started the course six months early. no doubt that her experience as a Robin volunteer has stood her in good stead for the future.

“I just really enjoy spending time with people and helping them. Even if it’s just in small ways, you really see they appreciate a bit of company and a chat. I really enjoyed mixing with other people. I worked in the licensing trade for 30 years, so I know how to talk – it’s a habit you don’t drop.”

My name's Paul. Having worked full time for over 30 years and part time for a further 8, I decided that I would take early retirement. Wondering what I could do with my time, it was suggested to me that I have the skills to volunteer as a Robin in my local hospital. Those skills are having the ability to chat endlessly to people and make hot drinks. In all my working career in various roles, I have never felt more valued, respected and genuinely part of a team. I would encourage anyone who likes helping others to give it a go!

I’m Marharyta, although most people call me Margo. I’m 19 years old and I volunteer at the Emergency Department in Glan Clwyd Hospital. I’ve been a Robin Volunteer since August 2024. I decided to be a Robin as I love chatting to and helping people. This experience fits perfectly around my school timetable and is invaluable to understanding what it is like for patients in hospitals. I want to pursue a career in medicine and my dream is to become a surgeon once I have completed my medical training. I would highly recommend be a Robin to anyone who wants to help others and has an interest in Healthcare.

Eleri joined the Robins in December 2020 in the heat of the pandemic after retiring from teaching after 38 years. Her day usually starts by making sure everything is ready for both staff and patients. This includes: preparing the clinic rooms, ensuring the tea/coffee machines are stocked and opening the windows. The rest of her time is spent talking with patients and their relatives, providing a listening ear in both Welsh and English along with supporting staff in their daily roles. “My role is very rewarding and fulfilling. I feel a part of a community in the Alaw unit. It’s made me realise, appreciate and live my life every single day. Plus it gets me out of the house! I would recommend volunteering with the Robins to everyone.”
