Our hospitals are fully smoke-free

To protect our patients, staff and visitors from the harmful effects of smoking, all our hospital sites are fully smoke-free.

Please do not smoke or vape at our hospitals, including all areas of the hospital grounds, car parks and vehicles.

Smoking is the single largest cause of avoidable illness and early death in Wales. Hospitals are one of many public places now required by law to be fully smoke-free. This measure will help protect the health and wellbeing of everyone who uses our hospitals.

We are committed to reducing the damage to health caused by smoking, including from exposure to harmful second-hand smoke.

Under new laws passed by the Welsh Government anyone found smoking at our hospital sites could be fined £100.

What to do if you are a smoker

  • If you are attending an outpatient appointment, please do not smoke anywhere on our hospital sites. Our smoke-free policy means patients and staff may not smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes or vapes.

  • If you are attending as an inpatient, our nursing staff and specialist smoking cessation staff will help you to stay smoke-free during your stay in hospital.
When you are admitted to hospital you will be asked if you are a smoker and offered free nicotine replacement therapies like patches and lozenges. You will also be offered personal support from a Help Me Quit advisor as part of our Help Me Quit in Hospital scheme.
Admission to hospital is a good opportunity to quit smoking for good. You can continue to receive free support and nicotine replacement therapies from Help Me Quit when you are discharged. We encourage all patients to take up this opportunity

  • All Betsi Cadwaladr’s mental health units will go fully smoke-free from September 2022.
