Milestones reached in development of new Orthopaedic Hub at Llandudno Hospital
Work on the new Orthopaedic Hub at Llandudno Hospital is progressing well, with several key areas of the build reaching important milestones as part of the major redevelopment to expand planned surgical care in North Wales.
The new hub, which will specialise in planned orthopaedic procedures such as hip and knee replacements, is being developed to help reduce waiting times and improve access to high-quality care across the region.
Significant progress has been made in recent weeks, including:
Energy Centre – The roof, soffit and fascia works have now been completed. Large electrical equipment is currently being installed, and the next phase will see rainwater goods added, with groundworks and cable installation due to recommence shortly to connect the centre with the hospital’s main switch room.
Theatres – Internal work continues, with drylining underway in the new theatre areas. First-fix mechanical and electrical (M&E) work is ongoing, and plastering has begun in the eight-bed recovery area.
Aberconwy Ward – Final decoration is taking place, and furniture is now in manufacture following site measurements.
X-ray Department – Drylining has been completed, with plastering and decorating in progress. M&E works are nearly complete, and flooring installation has begun.
Project Director Nicola Eatherington said: “We are really pleased with how the project is progressing. The teams on site are working incredibly hard to deliver this much-needed facility, which will make a huge difference to patients needing orthopaedic surgery. It’s exciting to see each area taking shape and moving closer to completion.”
Further updates will be shared as the project moves into its next phase.

The external structure of the new £29.4m Elective Orthopaedic Hub is starting to take shape at Llandudno Hospital.
The new hub will transform elective orthopaedic services at Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board and provides benefits for patients, staff and the wider North Wales community, by delivering a planned 1,900 procedures a year.
Specializing in high volume, low complexity care, the dedicated hub will increase annual surgical activity, by providing orthopaedic services away from hospitals, it will reduce the effects unscheduled care can have on elective treatment and reduce the chance of surgeries being postponed.
The next steps involve internal works, with decorating already underway inside Aberconwy Ward with the floors and doors installed within the next month.
Remedial works within the x-ray department are complete with the extension of the unit starting.
Cladding and roofing will be finished over next month on the new theatres to ensure it is watertight and then the internal works will begin.
Nicola Eatherington, Project Director of the Elective Orthopaedic Hub said: “It has been fantastic to see the Hub take shape over the last few months.
“We were delighted to recently welcome our Chief Executive to the site and provide her with a tour and an update on where we are up to as a project.
“The additional surgical capacity the building will provide will have a significant impact on the number of patients we can treat.
“We would also like to thank staff at Llandudno Hospital and the neighbours nearby for their patience during these works.”
