Frequently asked questions

My child has been referred – what happens next?
Your child will be offered an appointment within 14 weeks of the referral being accepted. You will be contacted regarding an appointment.

What should I expect from my first appointment?
Your first appointment will be an assessment appointment. You will be seen by a qualified speech and language therapist (SLT) and a case history will be taken where the SLT will ask you questions about your child’s development to gain background information. Your child’s speech and language skills will be assessed by the SLT who will gain information from the parent/guardian, from observations made during the session, through play and/or formal assessment. After this session, a decision will be made whether your child needs further input.

What if I can’t speak English?
If a translator is required for the child or/and the parent/guardian, this can be arranged prior to the appointment.

Can my child be re-referred?
If your child has previously been open to speech and language therapy but you have new concerns, you are welcome to re-refer. Please ensure that you provide as much detail as possible in the referral about the difficulties your child is having.
