Movement Disorder Service

The Movement Disorder Service provides specialist assessment and ongoing management for people living with Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease as well as other forms of Parkinsonism.

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects the brain. It is caused by a reduction in a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine helps your body to move properly. Without an adequate level of dopamine you may experience problems, including:

  • Tremor –  shaking of some parts of your body
  • Bradykinesia – slowness of movement
  • Rigidity – stiffness and difficulty of movement
  • Non-movement symptoms - including pain, difficulty sleeping and mental health problems

The Movement Disorder Team can help you manage these symptoms. This is often achieved by making sure you are prescribed appropriate medication. We can also refer to local supporting services including pharmacy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and dietetics.

After being diagnosed with Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease or another form of Parkinsonism you will be invited to attend the Movement Disorder Service to monitor your condition and help manage your symptoms. The Movement Disorder Service holds clinics in:
