C.A.L.D.S - Child & Adolescent Learning Disability Service
This service supports children and young people aged 5 years old to age 18 with a generalised Learning Disability who live in Conwy and Denbighshire.
The criteria for a Learning Disability is as follows:
- Areas of developmental delay; and
- Significant, generalised cognitive difficulties (IQ under 70)
- Significant generalised difficulties with adaptive skills (which includes communication, caring for self, relating to others, directing self, using community resources, academic functioning, health and safety awareness).
C.A.L.D.S Team aims to work with the child/young person and their families in a holistic manner, to develop person-planned approaches. They also provide evidence-based practice through:
- Initial assessments
- Anxiety and Anger Management sessions
- Behaviour Support Plans
- Self-help skills
- Keeping safe sessions
- Toileting
- Sexual and relationships educations
- Communication

How children & young people are referred to the service
- Referrals received from any professionals
- Parents can refer if already known to the service
- Education and health staff can refer along with social professionals
- Referrals meetings held every Tuesday
- Nursing and Psychology led
- CALDS referral form
What information do we need?
- Evidence of learning disability
- Cognitive assessments
- Adapted behaviour assessments
- Indications of adaptive functioning delay in 3 or more areas such as self help skills (dressing or eating)
