Help keep your children well this winter – make sure they have their flu vaccine
Please take time to read the information below and fill in the consent form so your child or children don't miss out on boosting their protection against flu.
Alternatively, you can download, print, complete and return a paper consent form to your child's school or your local school immunisation team.
Flu can be a serious and unpleasant illness in children. The painless nasal spray vaccine will help to protect your child from the risk of a severe flu infection, and reduce the chances of more vulnerable people in your community, including older relatives, catching the virus.
Our school immunisation teams will visit schools across North Wales to offer the flu vaccine throughout the autumn term. Flu vaccines are given at school to all children from Reception to Year 11 (born between September 1 2010 and August 31 2022).
Schools will let parents know the date of their flu vaccination clinic. Parents should remember to complete the consent form before the day of their child's vaccination. Catch-up sessions will be held for children who were unable to attend school on the day of the flu vaccination clinic.
Parents of children who are educated at home will be contacted by their local school immunisation team to offer the flu vaccine and make arrangements for vaccination.
Children aged two or three (born between September 1 2022 and August 31 2024) will be invited to have a free nasal spray flu vaccine at their GP surgery – please look out for an invitation to make an appointment to boost their protection against the virus. More information on eligibility for flu vaccination.
The quick and painless nasal spray vaccine is the recommended flu vaccine for most children and young people. This is the vaccine that will be routinely offered at our school clinics.
There are a very small number of children who are unable or choose not to have the nasal spray flu vaccine because it contains pork gelatine. If you wish your child to receive a gelatine-free injection instead of the nasal spray, you can indicate this on their consent form.
More information about flu vaccines, their ingredients and effectiveness, including frequently asked questions, is available from Public Health Wales.
