Your space and what to bring

Your Space

All young people have their own bedroom with a bed, desk, chair and shelving. All rooms have an en-suite shower and toilet. There are pillows and duvet provided along with all bedding and towels. This is your own space within the hospital. You may bring photos to display, a blanket and a soft toy to make it feel more personal.

What to bring

We recommend you bring with you:

  • A coat for outings and walks
  • Dressing gown and slippers
  • Distraction and fidget toys
  • Electrical hair equipment (These will be kept for you in patient stores, to be used under supervision)
  • Device chargers (These will be labelled and kept in the charging room)
  • Personal toiletries (Tweezers and hair removal cream
  • – to be kept in patient stores and used under supervision)
  • A weeks’ worth of clothing
  • You are also welcome to bring personal diaries and journals. (not ring bound)

Some items you bring may need to be kept in your POD, this is a space accessible by staff where we store things that belong to you but you may not be able to keep in your room, for example anything which is corded.

There are laundry facilities at NWAS. Young people are encouraged and supported to wash their own clothes. We provide Non-Biological powder.

What not to bring

When you arrive at NWAS, staff will check your belongings. This also happens each time you return to the unit after going on leave.

We do this to make sure that no items are brought onto the ward that could affect your safety, wellbeing, or treatment.

If staff find anything that is not suitable for the ward, the item will be safely returned to your parent or carer.

  • Book and magazines with offensive content or that are not age appropriate
  • Clothing that is offensive or revealing (e.g., with offensive slogans/pictures, items that are cropped or too short).
