While you’re staying on Kestrel Ward, we’d like you to join in with the daily routine. This means things like getting up in the morning, coming to the dining room for meals, meeting with your team, and helping plan your care. Throughout the day, your team may also ask to meet with you for meetings or therapeutic sessions. During school term, you’ll also go to the Education Centre Monday to Friday.
Everyone on the ward has regular checks (called observations) to make sure you’re safe and supported. When you come to NWAS, you’ll be given an observation level that suits your needs. This just means staff will check in with you at different times during the day and night.

You’ll have your own bedroom, with a bed, desk, drawers, and your own bathroom (shower and toilet). For privacy and safety, you can’t go into other people’s bedrooms, and other young people cannot go into yours.
Everyone is woken up at 7:30am, and breakfast is at 8:00am (8:30am on weekends).
During the day, we’ll encourage you to spend time out of your bedroom and join in with the ward routine, which includes education and therapy sessions. You can go to your room anytime, however access may be restricted if the MDT feel it is needed as part of your treatment plan.
Your bedtime depends on your age, we sometimes agree a slightly later bedtime on weekends. All phones and devices need to be handed in at an age specific time following your bedtime which we call Lights Out, staff take devices to be charged overnight. This is to help create a healthy sleep pattern.
| Age | Bedtime | Lights out |
| 12 to 13 year olds | 22:00 | 22:30 |
| 15 to 15 year olds | 22:30 | 23:00 |

Meal times are protected, which means this is a calm and settled time with no interruptions, appointments or visits (unless planned with the nursing team).
Visiting times are between the hours of 3:30pm – 7:30pm on weekdays during term time, times and duration of visits may vary depending on the young person’s care plan, we ask parents and carers to discuss your visit with the nursing team.
During weekends and school holidays there is more flexibility, however visiting time will always finish at 7:30pm.
