Wrexham Maelor doctor first in Wales to receive teaching excellence medal

An Acute Medicine Trainee has received the prestigious John Munro Medal for Excellence in Teaching from the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh (RCPE).
The award recognises Dr Munzir Malik’s exceptional contribution to teaching and training. Dr Malik’s achievement represents a significant milestone for medical education in North Wales and he is the first doctor working in Wales to receive the John Munro Medal.
Dr Malik has developed a strong reputation for innovative and practical medical education, with a particular focus on acute medicine, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), clinical skills and examination teaching. His approach combines structured teaching with practical, case-based learning designed to build confidence and competence among doctors and other healthcare professionals.
Reflecting on the achievement, Dr Malik said: “Teaching has always been one of the most rewarding parts of my career. For me, education is not simply about transferring knowledge, it is about helping clinicians develop the confidence, judgement and practical skills to provide better care for their patients.
“Receiving the John Munro Medal is an enormous honour, particularly because it carries the name of a physician whose passion for teaching influenced generations of doctors. I am incredibly grateful to the colleagues, trainees and students who have trusted me as an educator and whose feedback has continually encouraged me to improve.”
A major part of Dr Malik’s educational work has centred on developing practical, clinically relevant teaching opportunities. Through regular teaching, bedside education, ECG training, POCUS education and practical procedural sessions, he has worked to make learning more accessible, engaging and directly applicable to clinical practice.
His work also reflects a wider commitment to developing medical education across North Wales. Through initiatives in Acute Medicine and POCUS, Dr Malik has supported opportunities for clinicians to learn together, share clinical experience and develop practical skills that can ultimately translate into safer and more effective patient care.
