From North Wales to the Great Wall of China: Kelly's journey to support breast cancer awareness

08.10.26

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Kelly Duff, Senior Information Governance Officer, is helping to highlight the importance of early diagnosis after taking part in an extraordinary challenge to support breast cancer awareness.

Kelly recently joined CoppaTrek!, a nine-day fundraising challenge organised by CoppaFeel!, a youth-focused breast cancer awareness charity. The charity works to ensure breast cancers in young people are diagnosed early and accurately by encouraging people to know their bodies, recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and seek medical advice if they notice any changes.

Alongside training and fundraising, raising awareness of breast cancer and sharing CoppaFeel!'s message became a significant part of Kelly's journey. Early diagnosis remains central to the charity's work, as treatment is often more effective and outcomes can be improved when breast cancer is identified at an earlier stage.

During the experience, participants trekked several sections of the Great Wall of China, including Badaling, Huanghuacheng, Gubeikou, Jinshanling and Mutianyu. Facing steep ascents, crumbling steps and challenging terrain, the group pushed themselves to complete the trek, which concluded at the famous "Heavenly Staircase".

Despite the demanding conditions, participants were rewarded with spectacular views and the unique experience of walking along one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Together, the group raised an impressive £782,944 for CoppaFeel!, with £4,820 raised through Kelly's individual fundraising efforts.

Reflecting on the experience, Kelly said: "It was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever been part of and one I will never forget. Of course, having the opportunity to walk along one of the wonders of the world was incredible, but what made the experience truly special were the people I met along the way.

"Sharing the tough climbs, tired legs, unforgettable views, plenty of laughter and an amazing sense of achievement with such an inspiring group of people made it so much more than just a trek.

"I came home with incredible memories, new friendships and a huge sense of pride in what we achieved together. Raising money for such an amazing charity and helping spread an important message throughout the year is something I am incredibly proud of."

The challenge has helped raise awareness of breast cancer, encouraging more people to become familiar with what is normal for their body, recognise potential signs and symptoms, and seek medical advice if they notice any changes.

Kelly hopes her fundraising efforts and the conversations sparked throughout her journey will encourage more people to get to know what is normal for their body and seek advice if they notice any changes.
