The King’s Birthday Honours recognise individuals who have made exceptional contributions to society though public service, professional achievement, innovation, or voluntary work. An OBE, one of the United Kingdom’s highest honours, is awarded to individuals whose work has made a significant and lasting impact within their field, benefiting communities and advancing excellence across the United Kingdom.
This prestigious honour recognises Geeta’s lifelong dedication to improving the health and wellbeing of women and girls. Widely respected as a clinician, educator, leader and patient advocate, Geeta has been a leading voice in women’s healthcare for many years, championing improvements in clinical practice, patient experience and health outcomes both in Wales and across the wider UK.
Alongside her leadership role within the Health Board, Geeta previously served as Vice President of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG), where she led the College’s clinical quality agenda. Her work oversaw the development of internationally recognised RCOG Green‑top Guidelines, Scientific Impact Papers, and patient information resources. These influential publications continue to inform clinical practice and improve care for women across the UK and around the world.
In addition to her national leadership roles, Geeta has been a passionate advocate for women’s health, working to address inequalities, raise standards of care, and ensure that the needs and experiences of women remain central to healthcare planning and delivery. She has also played a significant role in supporting teams across maternity and gynaecology services, mentoring future generations of healthcare professionals and helping to shape the future of women’s healthcare.
Discussing the award, Fiona Giraud, Director of Midwifery & Womens Services said: “We are delighted to see Dr Geeta Kumar’s outstanding contribution to women’s health recognised in The King’s Birthday Honours.
