There are no walk-in casualty services at Abergele as all unscheduled care patients will be required to telephone the triage nurse to arrange a suitable time slot or referred to WECS registered optician sites who are trained to assess and treat some ophthalmic symptoms and conditions.

Primary Care Services The department has the support of a team of Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioners who provide unscheduled care and support. Practitioners can assess, diagnose, treat and prescribe medication for a variety of anterior segment conditions using patient group directives. For conditions effecting the posterior segment practitioners’ record patient history & carry out ocular examination prior to referral to medical staff. Practitioners currently see approximately 60% of unscheduled care eye attendees. |

Day Care Unit The unit has facilities primarily for patients undergoing surgery as planned day care and provides 16 recliner chairs. There are currently 2 beds within the unit for anaesthetic recovery and barrier nursing when required. The unit has a small treatment room, linen store, kitchen and consulting room. There is also a Pre-operative assessment area which provides patient privacy for assessment and this allows discussion to take place to assist for planned surgical day case admissions. |
