The purpose of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board's Mental Health Act Committee is to ensure that all the requirements of the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended) are met by the Health Board.
The Health Board’s Mental Health Act Committee has a very narrow remit. The purpose of the Committee is to consider and monitor the use of the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA), Mental Capacity Act 2005 (which includes the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) (MCA) and the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010 (the Measure) and provide assurance to the Board.
Governance, leadership, quality and safety matters relating to mental health fall within the remit of the Quality, Safety and Experience Committee. This Committee has continued to meet throughout the period of the pandemic.
Meetings of all the Health Board’s Committees are now taking place virtually. The forthcoming meeting of the Mental Health Act Committee which was due to take place on 18th September has been postponed. This decision has been taken due to a number of changes in leadership and to enable the new Executive Lead for Mental Health, Teresa Owen to be in attendance. This meeting will take place in October. Although the Mental Health Act Committee has not met during the COVID-19 pandemic, key reports on performance have been circulated to members.

The Annual Workplan sets out the Committee's working practices including the requirement for a Cycle of Business (CoB) which is regularly revised.
The Committee provides an annual report of activity to the Board 2020-21
