Welcome to the Special Care Baby Unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd. We are situated on the first floor within the St David’s Maternity Unit, between the Labour and Post-natal Wards.
The Unit has 10 cots, one stabilisation or short term intensive care cot, one high dependency cot and 8 low dependency cots. Your baby will be cared for by a team of medical staff lead by a Paediatric Consultant and a team of specially trained nursing staff supported by health care support workers, neonatal outreach, speech and language therapist, physiotherapist and many other professionals which work within the Team to support our Neonatal Service.
You are welcome to visit or telephone the Unit at any time. We will discuss our visiting policy with you taking into account your needs and wishes and provide you with a telephone number with which you can contact the Unit directly. After your baby has been admitted and you have met the staff caring for you as a family, you will be offered a tour of our Unit. If you have any questions, please ask any member of staff.
We encourage parents to become our partners in care. You will be supported with your feeding choices and to develop your skills to care for your baby from admission through to preparation for discharge home. For those who have chosen to breastfeed or express, we have portable breast pumps which you can loan free of charge during your baby’s stay on our Unit.
Our parent’s accommodation, Ty Enfys is situated on the ground floor close to the St David’s entrance. The accommodation is shared between ourselves and the Paediatric Ward. You are welcome to request to stay in Ty Enfys and every effort will be made to fulfil your request depending on occupancy.
We have a family room on the Unit, which you are welcome to use. There are facilities for hot drinks, and a television and DVD facilities. You are welcome to bring hot drinks into the Unit, but we request that you use a lidded cup when taking hot drinks to your baby’s cot side.
Prior to discharge home you will be invited to stay in the mother and baby room on the Unit with your baby. The room has en-suite bathroom facilities, a television, and there is a small kitchen for your use nearby. You will be supported during your stay by the nurses.
If you have any questions, please contact the Unit for information – 03000 841230 & 03000 841 231.
