The staff on the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) Wrexham would like to welcome you and your baby to our unit. SCBU is situated on the first floor, Unit 8, next to the labour ward

To gain access to the unit you will have to press the corresponding button for the unit on the intercom system outside the main door. Staff will check your details and let you on to the unit. For the safety and security of your baby, please do not let any other person come in the door behind you.

The Unit has twelve cots, one stabilisation or short term intensive care cot, two high dependency cot and 9 low dependency cots. Your baby will be cared for by a team of medical staff lead by a Paediatric Consultant and a team of specially trained nursing staff supported by health care support workers, neonatal outreach, speech and language therapist, physiotherapist and many other professionals that work within the Team to support our Neonatal Service. We have a BLISS volunteer who attends the unit every Wednesday 10am-12pm and provides emotional support.

You are welcome to visit or telephone the Unit at any time. We will discuss our visiting policy with you taking into account your needs and wishes and provide you with a telephone number with which you can contact the Unit directly. After your baby has been admitted and you have met the staff caring for you as a family, you will be offered a tour of our Unit. If you have any questions, please ask any member of staff.

We encourage parents to become our partners in care. You will be supported with your feeding choices and to develop your skills to care for your baby from admission through to preparation for discharge home. For those who have chosen to breastfeed or express, we have portable breast pumps which you can loan free of charge during your baby’s stay on our Unit.

Our parent’s accommodation is situated on the unit and we have three rooms available.  You are welcome to request to stay in parent’s accommodation, which if funded by our charity CHERISH. Every effort will be made to fulfil your request depending on occupancy.

We have a family sitting room on the Unit, which you are welcome to use. There are kitchen facilities for food and hot drinks, a television and small play area for siblings. You are welcome to bring hot drinks into the Unit, but we request that you use the lidded cup provided by CHERISH when taking hot drinks to your baby’s cot side.
